Become a Legionnaire Today: The Necessity of Avalon

Excalibur SwordThe White Nationalist movement in America is animated by the belief that current social and demographic trends portend the decline, displacement, persecution, and replacement of our people. The word “animated” is a bit of a misnomer, because it implies action of some kind. Cartoonish perhaps, …but not animated. One would think that such a belief would inspire action. After all, we believe that our very survival, and that of our future generations, is endangered.

People are inspired to action to lower their taxes a few percentage points, to raise fast food wages incrementally, and to donate to PBS’s television programming; but not to save their extended family from oblivion?

One would imagine that more time, money, and energy would go into White Nationalism than Sesame Street, given that profound existential threats are presumably more important than children’s puppet shows. It’s not that there are too few of us who believe this. There are at least hundreds of thousands of White Nationalists of various stripes in America, and that’s enough to spearhead a meaningful political movement. There are taboos and occupational threats between those folks and supporting nationalist projects, but they would find a way around those challenges if there were even a modicum of motivation to do so. Aside from a handful of limp-wristed “watchdog” groups which amount to glorified and overpaid bloggers, and a few hundred dysfunctional and self-destructive “antifa” degenerates, there’s not much meaningful opposition.

There’s not much going on to oppose, after all.

Stop It, or I’ll Bury You Alive in a Box!

This essay is not the latest in a long tradition of attempts to shame folks into activism. There’s more going on here than a half-time locker room pep talk is going to clear up. What’s required is not merely a quantitative boost in our motivation and morale, but rather a qualitative transformation of ourselves into the kind of people willing to stand up and lead the charge for our very survival. Our anemic exoteric and political struggle results from an anemic spirit, one which instinctively clings to materialism, social status, and comfort even as we understand–in the abstract–that we absolutely must organize and act swiftly and boldly in defense of our identity, our heritage, and our future generations.

The “shaming essays”, goading people to stop slacking and support or participate in identitarian politics in America always remind me of a classic Bob Newhart comedy skit in which a therapist barks, “Stop it!” at the patients after they describe their problematic behavior. White Nationalists aren’t going to be cured of their inaction and disorientation by simple demands to “Stop it!” The root problem must be identified and addressed before we’re going to achieve any meaningful momentum. The sickness of the mind which can lead a man to firmly conclude that his grandchildren will be persecuted and marginalized strangers in their own land if the system carries on as usual, and then carry on supporting and participating in the system as usual, must be sought out, identified, uprooted, and replaced with a more healthy and vital way of thinking.

Merely convincing people that we’re correct is necessary, but grossly insufficient. In fact, the majority of White Americans already know in their heart of hearts that racial and cultural differences aren’t superficial; they know that Jewish Power wags the dog of American culture, finance, and foreign policy; and they know that the current trajectory is a grim one of social and economic decline. While conventional activism adds some marginal value, mainstream politics and conventional “raising awareness” have achieved nil and will continue achieving nil because the masses suffering from the underlying moral and spiritual sickness can’t merely be cured of that sickness with increased “awareness”.

Contemporary White Nationalism is an exoteric solution to an esoteric problem, a failure of vitality and will. After all, if we were a vital people then the conversation about the porous and insecure Mexican-American border would be Mexico’s conversation. Sure, the political solution of putting up fences and sending up camera drones along the border would be helpful, but it wouldn’t really address the root cause, which is that our people are leaving a geopolitical vacuum which is attracting migrants.

Retracing our Steps: Against Reactionary Conservatism

Among those who grasp that our identitarian struggle is a moral and spiritual struggle, the intuitively obvious and most popular response is to attempt to culturally and spiritually rewind ourselves back to when we were more healthy. There’s a great debate within this community over where and when we should roll back to. For many, it’s Norman Rockwell’s fifties-era Americana. For others, it’s the Jim Crow or Antebellum South. The American and French Revolutions are popular points of departure, as well.

Even attempts which aren’t overtly antiquarian are effectively antiquarian. The “tea party” movement and Ron Paul’s libertarian project are both in theory and in imagery attempts to roll back to the Classical Liberalism of America’s founding generation. Many of their solutions are solutions for another time or place. Their civic nationalism may have been coherent a few decades ago when America was 90% White and its minorities were not empowered to challenge the imposition of the White American nationalist identity as the reverse-imperial “civic” identity. At this late hour, the wellspring of immigrants and the socio-political status of minorities precludes any kind of meaningful agreement on a unified “American” identity.

Many reactionaries are even into agrarianism, believing (accurately, but beside the point) that the old farm-oriented culture of yesteryear was more virtuous and less degenerate than our current post-industrial economy. Technological advances in agriculture and the scale of contemporary agribusiness have rendered the yeoman farmer economically obsolete. The advances can’t merely be stuffed back in the box, and we wouldn’t want to stuff them back in the box once we recognized how dependent we’ve become on Green Revolution advances in agricultural efficiency.

It’s certainly a romantic thought, going back to nature and the land. And it makes for a great hobby and contingency strategy in the case of political and economic upheaval. But it’s not a relevant economic model that can be presented as a legitimate alternative to our post-industrial service and information economy. The problem with looking to the past for solutions is that the past only offers solutions to past problems. And while there’s much to learn from and take inspiration from to be found in the past, what’s needful is a robust solution to present and future problems devoid of anachronism and sentimentality.

National BolshevismAgainst American “National Bolshevism”

Back in the 90’s, Russian political theorists, including the omnipresent Alexander Dugin, arrived at a sort of syncretism between Soviet nostalgia and conventional nationalism which radically redefined Russian political history to work around the collapse of Bolshevik ideology by smuggling the new wine of post-Soviet revanchism into the old bottle of Soviet Golden Age nostalgia and symbolism. To outsiders, this pseudomorphosis looks and feels absurd, with Joseph Stalin restored as a defender of the Orthodox Church who should perhaps be canonized, with Marxist economic reductionist ideology re-framed as less broad in scope, less malignant, and less central to the Soviet experiment, and with the requisite, expected, and natural revision of military history to fit the new script.

While the National Bolshevik Party itself is now illegal and marginalized, the basic idea has largely become Russia’s answer to the challenge it was presented with after the fall of the Soviet Union. And it’s pretty much working for them.

Will our own alternative to our rather similar leftist ideological empire be similar, embracing and extending American and Americana themes after the decline and fall of America as we currently know it? Reasonable people can disagree, but I believe, along with Francis Parkey Yockey and a handful of other dissident ideologues, that Marxism’s singular focus on economic theory in some ways resulted in dramatically less psychological damage to its adherents than the American experiment. While the vanguard of Bolshevism was assuredly Leftist and degenerate, that degeneracy didn’t trickle down to the peasantry in Eastern Europe as it has in the West.

The capitalist flavor of liberal cosmopolitanism has marinated more deeply into the West in general, and into America in particular. To be an “American” is no longer even intuitively tied to the founding stock of America as it remains in Russia. To be an American is to be greedy, selfish, and cosmopolitan. Period. In terms of identity, Russia is currently where we were at fifty years ago, with sizable minority populations which don’t meaningfully threaten the hegemonic “Russian” nation-state’s identity and direction. This will likely present a problem for them in the future, but we’re dealing with it now.

Our riddle of reconciling our past with a coherent identity and workable future orientation is much greater than Russia’s. I believe it’s unworkable. More importantly, I believe it’s unnecessary. While ethnogenesis (the conception of an essentially new identity altogether) is a momentous task, it’s less momentous than the task of salvaging something worth preserving from the wreckage of the American Experiment. That’s the central insight behind our controversial “Death to America” proclamation and speech, that we must make a clean break with the nostalgia, imagery, themes, memes, and theories of our current political altogether in pursuit of something completely new.

One can argue (…and many have) that there are redeeming qualities to be found in our founding fathers and their founding ideals. There are aspects of the American experiment worth preserving, to be sure. The question is whether there are enough good ideas to justify repairing the American identity (a la National Bolshevism) or whether we should work toward something new, and freely borrow what worked from the ruins of “America”. Those who insist on the former, on a restorative rather than radical approach, insist that our goal is an ambitious “pipe dream”. Fair enough, but I believe the task they’ve implicitly agreed to is even more ambitious and absurd.

If our very survival depends on its being done, then whether or not it’s hard to do or even impossible to do is beside the point. An attempt must be made.

Death to the Self

How does one overcome materialism, the coveting of social status, and comfort in order to adopt a motivated and action-oriented crusading mentality? Paradoxically, it requires taking a step back from action, below action, into one’s character, into one’s psyche, and ultimately into one’s soul, to fight what we call the “Inner Crusade” to overcome and defeat the “self” to make way for a renewed man capable of transcending his greed, insecurities, habits, and even his very life in the struggle for something greater than himself.

Julius Evola, writing on Jihad and Holy War in his essays on the Metaphysics of War notes…

In the Islamic tradition a distinction is made between two holy wars, the “greater holy war” (el-jihadul-akbar) and the “lesser holy war” (el-jihadul-ashgar). This distinction originated from a saying (hadith) of the Prophet, who on the way back from a military expedition said: “You have returned from a lesser holy war to a great holy war.” The greater holy war is of an inner and spiritual nature; the other is the material war waged externally against an enemy population with the particular intent of bringing “infidel” populations under the rule of “God’s Law” (al-Islam). The relationship between the “greater” and “lesser holy war”, however, mirrors the relationship between the soul and the body; in order to understand the heroic asceticism or “path of action”, it is necessary to understand the situation in which the two paths merge, the “lesser holy war” becoming the means through which a “greater holy war” is carried out, and vice versa: the “little holy war”, or the external one, becomes almost a ritual action that expresses and gives witness to the reality of the first. Originally, orthodox Islam conceived of a unitary form of asceticism: that which is connected to the jihad or “holy war”.

Illiterate Afghan nomads and belligerent “Islamist” terrorists are capable of consistently routing the American Empire’s war machine, and it has nothing to do with Allah being on their side. Islam still teaches the Radical Traditionalist lesson of overcoming the self, a teaching which was central to Medieval Christianity as well but has been all but forgotten in the contemporary West. As Christianity has degenerated in the West, it’s lost this perennial truth which was integral to the Early Church, that the rebirth of baptism is at least as much about killing the previous self as it is about celebrating the birth of the new self.

We Avalonians have been relying heavily on the initiatic guide to spirituality, Unseen Warfare, a book which serves as a guide to this process of transforming oneself into a disciplined and focused soldier for Christ. It doesn’t engage the “political” at all, and it doesn’t need to. Identitarian and traditionalist politics are dead in the water in the West because our pre-political house is not in order, and the first step toward achieving political success is to take a step back from politics altogether and account for our spiritual and physical health as individuals. If we achieve victory in this inner battle, we’ll handily defeat the American Empire.

Death to America

Contrary to popular belief, our “Death to America” slogan isn’t about renouncing citizenship or endorsing illegal activity. It’s not even about denigrating American history. It’s about the necessity of breaking away from this mass society and working toward the development of our own increasingly autonomous and independent subcultures which are less and less socially, culturally, politically, and economically dependent on “America”. Little of what’s left is worth preserving, and what’s left that’s worth preserving is more easily smuggled into a new identity.

America as we know it is going to decline. Actually, it’s already declining. Reversing its decline is impossible and undesirable, and investing time in hastening its decline is dangerous, unnecessary, and a less wise investment of our time and energy than preparing what will come next. The political entity may well stand long after it becomes a mere shell of what it once was, as if often the case with declining empires. Already, whether or not one is a “United States citizen” is a meaningless paperwork formality, with large and growing numbers of both foreign and domestic identities operating largely as autonomous nations under its aegis.

The Avalonian identity walks back Western heritage to before its point of departure from Orthodoxy, relying on our indigenous Western Rite liturgy for its religious character and on the Arthurian Cycle as the lodestar for a cultural renaissance. Corneliu Codreanu’s Iron Guard, more specifically his book, For My Legionaries, offers a basic template for a spiritually reborn vanguard organizing into an active and effective force for grassroots social and political change. Several “legions” have already been established throughout the US and Canada, a couple cooperative living arrangements are in the works, and there’s even a band being formed to help translate this rough sketch into a tangible lived cultural alternative.

Death to the World

Historically, one reason why identitarians in the West have repeatedly failed to gain traction is a lack of geopolitical relevance. Too frequently, to be identitarian has been synonymous with being parochial and disinterested in fostering regional and global partnerships with potential allies. While part of our problem has been rooted in our being right in the backyard of the Western Liberal (Atlanticist) geopolitical machine, racial supremacism and genuine bigotry against other peoples and cultures have also remained obstacles.

Fortunately, geopolitics are shifting in our favor for a change. However, we must be nimble enough to seize the opportunity. Russia’s in the early stages of positioning itself as the Traditional pole in a global dichotomy between Modernity and Tradition which is replacing the late 20th Century’s dichotomy between Communism and Capitalism. Those trying to decipher Dugin’s notoriously (perhaps deliberately) inscrutable geopolitical missives and those who confirm that Putin’s Russia is no Traditionalist paradise are missing the forest for the trees. This is the beginning of a disembodied geopolitical process Russia has no direct control over. Either they’ll continue slipping inexorably into the role of Traditionalist response to Western decadence or they’ll refuse to lead and one of the other global centers of power and trade will slip into that role.

If, as the Dugin- and Putin-skeptics insist, the Russians aren’t up to the task of challenging Western decadence, then so be it. We’ll ally ourselves with whichever global elite happens to be when the time comes. There will be a response and we need to position ourselves rhetorically and politically to help challenge the Jewish and capitalist oligarchs and their insipid globalist cosmopolitan agenda from within their backyard, in our authentically Western voices. We’re in a unique position, being of the same ethnic identity as the Jews’ primary henchmen in the 20th Century, a unique position which has held us back in the past but will afford us unique opportunities in the world to come.

Think Globally, Act Locally

In technology start-ups, there’s a mantra attributed to dot-com billionaire Vinod Khosla, “If it doesn’t scale, it doesn’t matter.” For those of us who’ve already been initiated, the political objectives of Avalon are decidedly tertiary, following both the transformative conversion to Traditional Western Orthodoxy and the manifestation of that conversion in local subcultures of mutual aid, trust, respect, and esteem. Our vision is indeed global, with an ambitious political agenda. But if it achieves nothing more than providing a rooted spiritual and moral framework and identity to the few dozen who’ve already made the plunge, then that’s victory enough.

The fasting isn’t easy. Overcoming one’s ego and vices isn’t easy. It would be much easier to place a gilding of identity and tradition over what’s left of the American identity and assemble some sort of conventional political coalition rather than going through all this hassle we’re going through of building a legionary vanguard with a radically reformed identity and way of thinking and behaving. If you think going about it that way is possible or advisable, then go for it. We believe that the problem with the West is rooted in something deeper than mere ideology and politics, and that we must think outside that box of secular humanist cosmopolitan mass culture if we hope to mobilize and achieve our identitarian and traditional goals.

It’s a simple and obvious bootstrapping problem.

We don’t have an ethnic parish yet because we haven’t amassed a sufficient amount of folks to achieve that. You refuse to join the folks working to achieve that because you don’t see an ethnically Avalonian parish, yet.
