What Exactly is Evil?

Saint Francis Borgia performing an exorcism, by Goya

1 Peter 5:8
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

Evil is a word that the modern world likes to throw around quite regularly. The definition appears fluid, evil is somewhere between mass murder and that the Starbucks barista forgot to put in your caramel mocha espresso shot in your morning coffee. Our society seems to nonchalantly use evil as a generic term to express displeasure or dislike. Evil is not a being or a person, it is an abstract idea if you ask any modernist.

Director Kevin Smith in his film Dogma included a scene in which the main demon Azrael went on a rant declaring “Evil is an abstract. It is a human concept!” In our mass media and cultural zeitgeist, evil is never allowed to be anything other than an outdated idea. In an age of moral relativism, actions are only different shades of gray on a spectrum, nothing more. This idea is not only wrong, it is incredibly dangerous. As the French poet Charles Baudelaire stated “The Devil’s best trick is to persuade you that he doesn’t exist!” The horror of the modern age is that the Devil can achieve victory through the very core tenant of Modernity, the rejection of the Church and Tradition.

The Traditional view of evil as being a tangible force that is actively seeking the ruin and destruction of all that is good is viewed as outdated by the modern world. We are called to forget about Satan, demons, witchcraft, and Satan worshipers because these things are viewed as “outdated” and “old fashioned.” Fighting against evil is called a “witch hunt” (not a bad thing in my opinion). Folks cannot afford to be tricked by the snake oil salesmen of Modernity; evil is as active as ever and the danger is all too real.

In an age of ever-changing views and standards, one must ponder “what exactly is evil?” The answer is simple, evil is Satan and all of those who follow him. Satan’s forces include both fallen angels known as demons and humans who willfully bind their souls to Satan through the practice of the black arts and a total rejection of Christ. As most people attempt to go about their daily routines of work and leisure, a battle is raging in the spiritual realm for the very soul of every person on this planet. Pastor Ray Stedman remarked that “This [spiritual] battle takes many casualties, and there are no innocent bystanders, no non-combatant. Every human being on the planet, whether he or she is aware of it or not, is forced to take one side or the other in this great cosmic war. There is no room for neutrality. So it is critically important that you and I know how to defend ourselves and arm ourselves for battle.”

One must pick a side in this battle and Christians are called to be warriors, there is no middle ground because both God and the Devil are playing for keeps.

Christians are told from Scripture that we are protected through our Faith from the forces of darkness. The book of Ephesians states that through our Faith in Jesus Christ and our devotion to the Faith that believers “Put on the whole armor of God… For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.” There is a battle of angels, demons, and souls raging all around us in a realm that we cannot see with our eyes, but is nonetheless as real as any conflict of armies and tanks in the physical realm. The Bible teaches us that evil is not abstract, but an active opponent of Christ and his Church, of which we are members.

Christ himself was the original exorcist when he performed numerous cases of casting out demons from the afflicted. Mark 3:11 tells us that “And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God.’” Even the mightiest of demons and the Devil himself cannot deny that Christ is the Son of God and that God has eternal power over all spirits, good or evil. The demons are without number, Father Gabriele Amorth who is the Vatican’s chief exorcist in Rome stated that when asking a demonically possessed man how many demons there are in existence, the demon replied “We are so many that, if we were visible, we would darken the sun.” Faced with an enemy who wishes to destroy us and whose numbers are beyond comprehension it would be easy to fear our demonic opponents and their human foot soldiers but the Christian Faith does not tire and our warriors through the power of the Blessed Trinity shall overcome our opponents. Should it take us an eternity, the Church Militant will find and exterminate them all.

The original form of the Our Father includes the line “deliver us from the Evil One.” Only through the Jewish and Communist subversion of the Second Vatican Council did the tide begin to turn against Tradition within the Catholic Church. Catholicism is a key target of Leftist and Jewish subversion due to the fact that it is through the Church that the Jewish Question was properly handled, the Muslim invasions were repelled, and Traditional society was allowed to prosper.

The Church has always been a crown jewel for Satan due to the fact that it is the organized resistance to his agenda here on Earth. The Evil One attacks the faithful and subverts civilization both blatantly but also through trickery and subversion. The nature of evil is deceit, when hunting witchcraft and heresy one must look past surface impressions in order to determine the true nature of our opponents. Eve was deceived by the serpent in the garden of Eden and trickery is as dangerous of a threat as demonic possession. Subversion is like a tree that grows roots which spread poison far and wide throughout the world. We must be on guard against the foe in all cases, protecting against external threats and internal heresy.

Attacks upon clergy and religious leaders to bring them down in order to discredit the Church are at the cornerstone of the Devil’s plan. Every time a pastor is caught in an affair or another scandal rocks the Church, many of the faithful fall to the Devil’s whisperings and fall away from the Faith. We must pray for priests and pastors because they are our spiritual leaders and they are most frequently attacked by demonic influence. There is a terrible darkness descending upon the Occident and the entire world, and I doubt that we shall see it ended in our lifetimes.

The levels of demonic activity are oppression, infestation, and possession. Depending on if the area has been cursed or been a part in a tragedy or place of witchcraft it is far more likely to be infested with demonic presence. Tragedy in the form of murder or abuse has been described as being a lure to demons. Given the rise in witchcraft, black masses, divorce, Satanic sacrifices, and family abuse more and more of American soil is being claimed by the enemy.

The modern age has forgotten what true evil is, thus allowing much of the Devil’s work to be done without a unified opposition. In previous ages the Church provided a staunch defense against the forces of darkness. The Rite of Exorcism has been practiced from Christ himself and is carried through Apostolic Succession in the modern Church. Even as the poison of Modernity corrupts parts of the Church, the beating heart of Christ allows the true believers to carry on his ministry. The spiritual battle for men’s souls takes warriors to cast out demons, minister to those oppressed by Satan and his forces, and mobilize in prayer to stand in defiance of human sin and nature and the plots of the Devil.

Our protectors and intercessors in this world are Saint Michael the Archangel and the choirs of angels who defend the faithful. From the book of Revelation we know that Saint Michael is the Archangel who led God’s forces against the rebellious Lucifer and the legions of the fallen angels. Scripture tells us of how “war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” Revelation 12:7-9

The Church in both the East and the West has always acknowledged Saint Michael as being a special protector of Christians and the patron Saint of soldiers. From Italy to Serbia the faithful have erected shrines and Cathedrals to Saint Michael and he alongside the warrior Saint George were the two patron Saints of chivalry. Europeans especially found a tie with the martial struggle and honorable defense of the innocent that Saint Michael engages in on a daily basis. Pope Leo XIII after seeing a vision of Satan proclaiming to God that he would destroy the Church, wrote the prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel that most Catholics recite after Mass. Every Christian should call upon Saint Michael to defend them on a daily basis as we face Satanic and demonic attacks relentlessly.

Altarpiece of St. Michael, by Gerard DavidSaint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

One of the most overlooked elements of evil incarnate in our world is the practicing of witchcraft and Satanic worship. In previous ages when righteous Inquisitors and crusaders would root out heresy and wickedness, now society is told to accept wickedness as simply being a “religious” choice. While on occasion previous generations of Christians might be overzealous in hunting down Satanists and witches, most of the time they righteously put Satan worshipers to the torch in compliance with Biblical law. The only way to handle heresy and witchcraft is to root it out with fire and the rope. Anyone who allows a witch or Satanist to live shares in the crime of their continued existence. Exodus 22:18 “You shall not permit a witch to live.”

Murderous Satanic cults are spreading throughout the globe which specialize in Satanic sacrifices of animals and humans, like the Beasts of Satan in Italy. The Beasts of Satan committed three ritualistic murders and exposed the growing undercurrent of Satanism among the youth in Italy. Italian police found that there are six hundred and fifty Satanic organizations in Italy alone. Here in the United States we have witnessed a dramatic rise in the practice of witchcraft and Satanism. The internet and a growing social acceptance has brought the witches’ covens and practicing of black masses into the mainstream. This growth is staggering in such a short period of time “In 2008, some 342,000 people identified themselves as Wiccans, up from 134,000 in 2001 and up significantly from 8,000 in 1990.” Satanic Black Metal promotes the message to a young and impressionable crowd while the growth of the New Age movement targets many who are disaffected by mainstream American society but do not wish to have to follow any set of morals or rules as found in Christianity. The modern American view of hedonism and worship of self fits hand in hand with Satanism and witchcraft. The logical extreme of capitalism and the idolatry of the individual leads to worshiping at the feet of Satan himself.

Around the globe the use of Ouija boards, Tarot cards, and black magic can be linked to the normalization of these behaviors in our post-Christian society. The media, music, and our education system insults Christianity while promoting hedonistic pursuits and the worship of evil found in the black arts. In Christian societies tools of Satan worship and communing with evil would be hunted down and destroyed by the Inquisition, now you can buy them at Barnes and Noble. While everyone who uses tarot cards and Ouija boards is not a Satan worshiper, they are tools who open the doorways to Satan and demonic influence. Kids are not taught to fear and stay away from occult materials, instead it is actively promoted to them.

Evil in the modern age is a tricky opponent. Demons actively oppress and possess tens of thousands while the culture and media is complicit in pushing Satan’s anti-Christian and anti-Traditional agenda. Our opponents continue to gain footholds in previous Christian strongholds and members of our folk are manipulated away from the Faith in order to worship the forces of darkness.

The solution is simple. Our enemy has not changed in millennia, and the way to defeat them has not changed either. Christian warriors must be steadfast in our Faith, turning to prayer and devotion to the Church as the number one protection and weapon against evil. Through Christ we have a guaranteed victory at the end of time in which “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” Philippians 2:10

Satan and his legions both in the physical and spiritual realm shall be forced to their knees by our warrior God and his faithful army of Saints. Victory is guaranteed in the end, but in the material realm we must work every day as soldiers for Christ to destroy the enemy wherever we find him. Through educating those around us about the influences of Satan and the occult we can use information to help keep our brothers and sisters from knowingly turning to evil. Destroying occultic materials and literature can close potential doorways to help prevent them from influencing others. We must trust in our Church, our clergy, and our community to unite together as an army for Christendom.

Saint George and Saint Michael should be invoked to be our protectors and inspiration as we face down the legions of evil before us. Finally we must know that our first mission is always to be members of the Church Militant. Our love of family and folk is because of our Faith, not in spite of it. I love my race, culture, and heritage because I am a Christian, these things are inseparable. While the task looks daunting with billions of unconverted needing to hear the Gospel, legions of demons attempting to stop us at every turn, a culture that has been subverted by Satan, and the corruption of mainstream Church’s away from a masculine defense of the Faith all adds together to make our mission seem impossible; but through Christ all things are possible.

In our darkest hour, the folk always returns to Christ and the Church. There can be no victory except through Christ. Several hundred Crusaders retook the Holy City of Jerusalem from hundreds of thousands of Muslims, Charles Martel and his faithful army drove back the Muslim invaders, the banner of Christendom shall fly over every nation, without question. Brothers and Sisters, this is a call to action against evil. Onward Christian soldiers!

Excellent point about the clergy being under constant attack. I recall, a few days ago, listening to the local Catholic radio station and they were celebrating their Saint of the Day, St. Cajetan. One of the reasons he was being extolled is for setting up Church run pawn shops that “aided the poor” by not subjecting them to the exorbitant rates of interest charged by the typical moneylenders of that time (No, they didn’t mention who they were. What a surprise.). And so now we have our Church celebrating one of the most deceptive of all the evils and its entry into this vile practice, usury.

The corruption began long before Vatican II. The question: How does the Church Militant undo damage going back centuries while still respecting the authority of the Church hierarchy? Rebellion makes you guilty of heresy and a Protestant. Failure to rebel against a Church that has obviously grown heretical itself makes you an accomplice.

    Tough call.

    John,

Ultimately, I believe that the Catholic Church is a decidedly human, parochial instrument of Christianity. So it is not necessary for faith or salvation.

I agree with you – as a lifelong Catholic – that it has been fully subverted. TheOccidentalObserver has documented the history of crypto-Jew insidious attacks, and it is plainly obvious in the increasingly liberal orthodoxy they enforce. (One refrain at the Catholic.com forums is “racism is a sin”. I asked where that was in the Bible and the post was promptly censored). The Catholic Church is now as controlled by Jews as Pat Robertson or the black Baptist phonies. (My Catholic high school – a wonderful incubator of many great men in previous decades – very quickly pivoted into a huge “football school” full of blacks, political correctness, and non-existent academic standards once they got a taste of football success in the 1990’s. Its Catholicism is nominal, and this is the case at many Catholic institutions.)

Of course, an individual Catholic parish itself might have a great congregation and be largely immune to contemporary Church political correctness, just the same as a given church in the Southern Baptist orgnanization might be, too. But the goodness of these parishes is to be credited to its members and traditions, not to the modern Vatican.

Psychologically, it is romantic and comforting to think of the Vatican as a protector of tradition, faith, and race. Just as it is comforting to think of “journalists” as stringently objective men wearing fedoras passionately investigating the truth and earnestly exposing corruption and fraud. Alas, both of these are now mere ideals from our memory. Churches are as Jewish controlled as the mainstream media.

The answer to the journalist question is: Become the nobler journalist and build a news org. with others of like mind.

      Easier said than done.

The U.S. dollar is the lifeblood of the West so those who control it can promote the corrupt news organizations and drown out the noble ones. The same goes for the churches – even the Vatican.

It’s our church. Corrupt as it is, it’s ours. Therefore it is up to us to save it. We have the benefit of hindsight so repairs can be made, all scripturally sound of course, and future councils can be held to undo the damage of Modernity. But first we need that blood transfusion.

I am sure this is at least the twentieth era in history where they without hope have looked with resigned eyes and called the Catholic Church–human.

    • Our Lord and God, Jesus Christ said the gates of Hell will never prevail
against His Church, which is the Roman Catholic Church. He didn’t say it couldn’t be infiltrated by His enemies and that has certainly happened by modernists, freemasons, communists, protestants, feminists, etc.

Although I am not now, nor have I ever been, any kind of Abrahamic (The genus encompassing the species Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), I recognize evil, in these terms: An entity is evil, from my perspective, if at the same time it is subjectively hostile to me it is also credibly objectively threatening.

  • Leslie H. Higgins

Excellent article, Mr. Heimbach. As good an overview of the power of the devil in our times as I have seen in years.
